To #hashtag or not to hashtag, #thatisthequestion? 🤔 This week we look at the use of hashtags across social media.
1. ARE THEY STILL RELEVANT?
Yes, kind of. But a hashtag is not as relevant as they have been in the past. And they’re being overlooked by more prevalent trends and search algorithms with video and more powerful AI/image-indexing capabilities. HOWEVER, hashtagging is still most-popular on instagram and pretty much purpose-less on Facebook. And until hashtags are hidden or removed altogether they’ll continue to allow you to create specific hashtags with your content – allowing users to search and interacting with grouped hashtagged content. A tasteful amount of hashtagging never hurts – the algorithms still reward ‘good’ hashtagging practice. #keepgoing
2. DO THEY STILL WORK?
Yes, but not in the way you’d expect. For social media users – it makes it easy to search for specific tagged content like #burgershop or #burgers, but the content creator would have had to tagged both the above hashtags for their content to be searchable (remember, hashtags don’t work like metatagging keywords on your website). AND FOR CONTENT CREATORS – you could truly own a catchy or trendy hashtag like #getsaucy with repeated use or ownership. These have proven to be invaluable – almost as powerful as a strong website domain name or unique username.
3. DOES USING HASHTAGS OPTIMIZE MY NEWSFEED CONTENT?
Hashtags alone won’t get you to the top of the newsfeed but they still serve their purpose. Using an ample amount of hashtags will do their trick, but don’t push the limit or become that annoying account that has #50shadesofhashtags at the end of every post. Instagrams algorithms will pick up lots of things like hashtag bombing and may even penalize your content’s news feed positioning for overuse. We think #lessismore is a smart approach, and you could add a list of hashtags to your content strategy to keep them fresh and #relevant for each post.
